In 2007, Lakshmi Iyer founded Abhinay Fine Arts in Seattle with a simple conviction: that creativity deserves a real home — not just a stage for performances, but a structure for building creative lives. Nearly two decades of teaching, producing, and community-building later, that conviction became KalaArangam.

 

We started in St. Louis. But the idea had been forming for years — through every dance class, every production, every conversation with an artist trying to figure out how to make their work sustainable. What Lakshmi kept seeing was the same thing: creatives doing brilliant work in isolation, when what they needed was each other.

 

There was a time when artists co-mingled and co-created naturally — when community wasn't a buzzword but a survival strategy. KalaArangam is an attempt to bring that back. Deliberately. With structure, support, and real investment in the people doing the work.

 

For those of us in the diaspora, that need runs deeper. We can feel caught between worlds — connected to a rich creative inheritance but not always seen as part of the broader cultural conversation. KalaArangam exists to change that. Not by centering one tradition or one art form, but by building a platform for the full range of what our community creates — across every field, every medium, every ambition.
